Created in January 2014, the Data Innovation Lab (DIL) plays the role of AXA Group’s center of expertise for Big Data/ R&D projects. The DIL supports AXA entities’ big data projects by acting as an accelerator to carry out pilots and drives the creation of technological platforms to ease the operational roll-out. We have gathered both the latest data science tools and a team of experts in innovation, data and data science.
The DIL’s key mission is to help AXA entities become data - driven companies by contributing to build technological platforms, acting as a technological hub towards external to explore the technological opportunities for insurance business.
Its approach for supporting entities’ projects relies on 4 principles: “Entrepreneurial spirit”, “Fail fast”, “Agile” and “Learning by doing”.

The DIL team is composed of employees from headquarter but also of employees of French and international business units.
Thirty experts are currently working in the DIL but we expect to grow in 2015 in order to support more effectively the Group's entities and to manage an increasingly number of projects.

MISSIONS
Directly reporting to the Head of the Data Innovation Lab, the Chief Data Scientist plays a crucial role in embodying the data science for the Group : promoting data science topics through the whole entities, helping entities in integrating data science in their organization (developing activities and attracting / hiring people) and creating / animating the Group AXA data scientist network to ensure a global strategy and approach consistency.
Coordinate the data scientist teams / network
The Chief Data Scientist is in charge of mentoring the data scientists’ team at DIL and across AXA entities. He/she:
Creates the AXA Data scientist Network and animates the community;
Participates to the hiring process of data scientists over the Group, brings potential candidates to apply, interviews best candidates;
Monitors the technical progress and careers of data scientists;
Holds regular technical meetings for data scientists to share ideas, problems, new developments;
Assists data scientists on their projects if needed;
Brings to data scientists’ attention new promising practices, scientific articles, algorithms …
Monitor the Data Science training program
The Chief Data Scientist is in charge of the definition, coordination and animation of data science’s training program for the Groupe, both inside and outside AXA. He/she:
Identifies the training needs & targets of entities within AXA in terms of data science;
Participates in the elaboration of the training programs with AXA U;
Coordinates the contribution of DIL for some of the training modules;
Links with selected academics and schools to provide seminars on DIL and attract best students;
Collects the information about best-in-class MOOCs, video lectures and training manuals.
Elaborate the innovation process
The Chief Data Scientist is in charge of maintaining and evolving the innovation process within DIL. He/she:
Articulates the future of data science research through trends analysis, analysis of DIL current research position, benchmarking our laboratory and others;
Defines research management and transfer strategy towards other DIL and AXA entities;
Consolidates potential R&D topics by performing preliminary studies on the feasibility, risks and potential outputs; He/she proposes ways to handle each topic;
Works directly on R&D topics, with other members of the DIL
Connect to the eco-system of partners
The Chief Data Scientist is in charge of the animation of the Data science community inside and outside AXA. He/she:
Identifies opportunities to connect to academic and industrial laboratories;
Animates the innovation network;
Organizes collaborative projects with selected academic research laboratories and optimizes their funding (e.g. Crédit Impôt Recherche and Pôles de compétitivité, ANR, EC, CIFRE PhDs …);
Incorporates best in class academic works within DIL projects;
Orients the watch done by specialized agencies and gives them topics to drill down;
Collects the Business Intelligence information produced in the entities;
Contributes to the strategy to translate changes and new opportunities observed into DIL topics;
Identifies start-ups and SMBs that can bring value to existing or new DIL programs;
Defines, when useful, potential PhD topics and associates with selected research laboratories.
Develop assets
The Chief Data Scientist is in charge of the assessment, selection and coordination of DIL’s assets, making sure projects developments are capitalized and best re-reused. He/she:
Identifies the projects bricks which could be re-used;
Identifies the assets to be built in any case (outside of projects);
Lead the development of the assets
During projects: leveraging the Business Transformation team
Outside of projects: leveraging its data scientists
Connects with the other teams at DIL to make sure everybody is aware of the existence of assets.

Profil recherché

Technical and professional skills
Degree in computer science (engineering school diploma, PhD, Masters ...)
Strong analytical skills
Strong background in mathematics, algorithms and databases to facilitate other team members’ understanding and to substantiate a detailed analysis of the latter
Professional experience in project management and in change management
Experience in Business and Finance is a plus, or in the customer life cycle (cross selling, Up selling) in the banking, credit scoring or other financial sector (banking, credit scoring ...)
Fluency in English & French mandatory
Interpersonal skills
Ability to work in a complex and matrix international environment: a decentralized organization with many stakeholders and multiple skills
Ability to influence strategic decisions through conviction and promotion of the entities’ aligned vision
Preference for working in a multidisciplinary team,
Experience
12 to 18 years of professional experience, especially navigating between industrial and academic environment, able to understand and exploit the added value of one environment to the other one
